6/2/2026 – The Senior Citizens and Sports areas of the Fuengirola City Council have organized a new hiking route, included in the ‘Healthy Fuengirola’ program, with the aim of promoting outdoor physical activity among the city’s elderly people. The initiative will take place on Saturday, February 21, starting at 9:00 a.m., leaving from Plaza de la Constitución to tour the downtown area of the city. The Councilor for Families, Equality and Social Welfare, Cristina Bornao, has offered more details of this activity.
“Urban hiking activities are guided tours through the municipality, with the aim of offering our elders an outdoor sports alternative with a simple, accessible and risk-free activity,” said Bornao, indicating that “walking is a fun way to break with the routine and enjoy outdoor sports, and the best thing is that it is for everyone. It adapts to the physical level of each person. Urban hiking is a gentle physical activity, perfect for anyone who wants to move and enjoy Fuengirola, with the support “with expert instructors who will guide you every step of the way.”
The councilor has highlighted the benefits that this activity brings to older people, which on a physical level improves cardiopulmonary resistance, increases strength, strengthens the immune system, lowers sugar and cholesterol levels, improves sleep or relieves muscle pain; On a psychological level: it improves cognitive functions, moods and reduces anxiety; while at a social level it helps combat sedentary lifestyle, isolation and strengthens social relationships.
Regarding the hiking route, the councilor has indicated that “it will begin at nine in the morning in the Plaza de la Constitución, where we will do a joint warm-up before leaving, around nine thirty, to tour the center of the city, an area for which I am the councilor responsible.”
The walk will begin in Plaza de la Constitución to visit spaces such as Las Rampas, the Puerto Deportivo, Plaza Picasso, Avenida Clemente Díaz, Paseo de los Murales de El Boquetillo, Parque del Sol and will end in Parque de España.
To conclude, Bornao has pointed out that “it will be a route of about four and a half kilometers, of low difficulty and it will take us approximately an hour and a half. I encourage everyone to register as soon as possible with the Senior Citizens Department, so that they can join the large group of older people who participate in these activities to do physical activity outdoors.”
