Fuengirola is once again home to ‘The Sanctuary’, the exclusive preparatory campus for NBA players

Stars such as Klay Thompson (Dallas Mavericks), Norman Powell (Chicago Bulls) and Hugo González (Boston Celtics) have attended this edition.
07/23/2026. Fuengirola is once again home to ‘The Sanctuary’, the exclusive preparatory campus for NBA players. The Deputy Mayor, Rodrigo Romero, and the Councilor for Sports, Julio Rodríguez, attended yesterday the presentation of the fifth edition of this preseason experience organized by the NBA players’ union (NBPA) and which will take place at the Fuengirola-Higuerón Training Center.
The event, which was also attended by the Sports delegate of the Andalusian Government in Malaga, Carlos García, the head of International Relations and Marketing of the aforementioned professional group, Matteo Zuretti, and the Boston Celtics player, Hugo González, highlighted that the town is an ideal place to host pre-seasons and top-level professional sports preparations.
In the five years that The Sanctuary has been held in Fuengirola, more than a hundred stars from the best basketball league in the world have passed through the El Higuerón municipal facilities. In this edition, names such as four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson (Dallas Mavericks), Norman Powell (Chicago Bulls), Jay Huff (Indiana Pacers) or Shaedon Sharpe (Portland Trial Blazers), among others, stand out.

This initiative combines physical and technical preparation days with cultural and recreational experiences in the environment. The technical training will take place at the Fuengirola-Higuerón Training Center. It is a municipally owned facility managed by the world champions of basketball sports, Berni Rodríguez and Joseì Manuel Calderón, and has everything necessary to carry out physical and technical preparations at maximum performance.
The facility, measuring 1,500 square meters, has two basketball courts, locker rooms, areas dedicated to rehabilitation and a gym with state-of-the-art machinery.
