The Fuengirola City Council reinforces cleaning efforts to combat the flowering and fall of jacarandas
The streets with the presence of this tree species receive a special cleaning treatment daily with high-pressure cleaning machines. These tasks are complemented by the biological treatment carried out by the Department of Urban Ecology specifically in all areas of the city.
5/14/2026 – Fuengirola City Council has reinforced cleaning efforts to combat the flowering and fall of jacarandas. This was announced today by the Councilor for Cleaning, Carmen Díaz, on Enebros de Los Pacos Street, one of the streets in the city where these specimens have the greatest presence.
“The jacaranda tree has a beautiful flowering but it is very uncomfortable when the flowers begin to fall and release a sticky substance. Therefore, for several years, around this time, we have reinforced the cleaning work in the streets where there are more specimens of this type,” said Díaz, noting that “on this occasion, between May 7 and July 7, we launch a special service that is made up of 7 workers who work from Monday to Sunday, during business hours. morning and afternoon, for the specific cleaning of the flowering of the jacaranda tree, reinforced by four high-pressure cleaning vehicles and a cleaning tank.”
Díaz has pointed out that, in addition to the team that is currently working on Enebros Street in the Los Pacos area, “we have other teams that are distributed in various areas of the city, both in the most urban center and in the peripheral neighborhoods, dedicated to eliminating the flowering of these trees, which although they are very uncomfortable at this time of year, are beautiful, they animate and brighten our city a lot and, in addition, it is also one of the trees that absorbs the most carbon dioxide.”
In this sense, the councilor explained that “the objective is that, when we reach the strongest period of flowering decline, that glue that remains on the sidewalks is cleaned quickly to keep the city as clean as possible.”
Carmen Díaz has indicated that the flowering and fall of jacarandas “is something that occurs every year, it is uncomfortable, but with this special cleaning and this programming what we want is to alleviate it a little, because in addition to being annoying, it makes our streets ugly and dirty.”
Furthermore, the councilor has highlighted that this action of the Cleaning service is complemented by the biological treatment that the Department of Urban Ecology carries out specifically each year with all the jacaranda specimens in the city. “The two councils work in a coordinated manner and, a few weeks ago, the boxes with aphids were inserted that make the flowering not so intense and, therefore, the effects on the streets are minor.”
To conclude, Díaz pointed out that the flowering of jacarandas usually lasts for a period of almost two months. “The flowering period is not always the same, but depends on temperatures and the arrival of spring, which is why we extend this special cleaning service until the beginning of July.”
