The Fuengirola City Council participates in a campaign to visualize celiac disease on the occasion of the International Day of this disease, which is commemorated this Saturday, May 16, as explained by councilor Francisco José Martín. To this end, the city’s urban buses and municipal buildings will have information posters about the ‘Fuengirola Gluten-Free’ Network, made up of a dozen establishments in the city that offer products suitable for celiacs.

“Next Saturday, May 16, Celiac Disease Day is celebrated and for this reason, the Fuengirola City Council, for several years, has been carrying out a campaign on the city’s urban buses, where posters are placed remembering that Fuengirola participates in this event through the ‘Fuengirola gluten-free’ network,” explained Martín, pointing out that “celiacs can safely go to eat in the businesses included in the network, such as butcher shops, fry shops, restaurants or pizzerias.”
According to data provided by groups such as the Celiac Association of Málaga (ACEMA), 4% of the Spanish population may have celiac disease, although the majority is unaware of it, as only 1% is recognized. They are people who have digestive problems, which can affect them in different ways, including when it comes to getting pregnant.
In this sense, Martín has highlighted that “it is important to know about celiac disease to treat those people who suffer from it and make their lives as easy as possible. We in Fuengirola were one of the first cities in the province, along with Málaga capital and Rincón de la Victoria, to launch a gluten-free network so that all businesses that were interested could join.”
Establishments interested in joining the ‘Fuengirola gluten-free’ network can contact the Malaga Celiac Association (ACEMA) by calling 952006887 or 617380087 or the website www.celiacosmalaga.es. In addition, for more information, you can also contact the Health area of Fuengirola City Council by phone: 951 915 228.
