The Fuengirola City Council replaces more than a hundred trees on Las Gaviotas Avenue
The action includes the planting of 54 Platanus orientalis and 59 Metrosideros, the creation of a 460-meter planter with native species and the installation of four new benches
12/3/2025 – Fuengirola City Council is carrying out the replacement of more than a hundred trees on Las Gaviotas Avenue. This was announced this morning by the Councilor for Urban Ecology, José Sánchez, who visited the area together with the councilor responsible for the Carvajal neighborhood, María Hernández.
“From the Department of Urban Ecology we are acting on Las Gaviotas Avenue to completely renew the grove, which was showing notable deterioration and required a comprehensive intervention along the entire road, as demanded by the residents of the area,” Sánchez explained.

The work has been carried out in two phases. The first took place in the month of October and affected the section between the Sun roundabout and the monument to San Rafael, where 54 specimens of Platanus orientalis have been planted, strategically arranged to guarantee shade along the avenue. In addition, a 460-meter linear planter has been created with native plants and four new benches have been installed. The municipal investment allocated to this intervention amounted to 119,524.48 euros, with VAT included.
In the second phase, which extends from the San Rafael monument to the Diversity roundabout, Urban Ecology workers have replaced 59 Metrosideros, a species especially suitable for coastal areas due to its resistance to wind and maritime conditions.
“We are very satisfied with the work carried out by the Green Zones team, because the work has been carried out for a couple of weeks and between the two phases of action, Las Gaviotas Avenue has already had all of its trees replaced,” said Sánchez.
The person in charge of Urban Ecology has pointed out that “it is evident that from the City Council we are trying to replace all the trees that are missing in the different urban spaces of the city. For some time now we have been drawing up contract files to replace them. Before the summer we had a contract in which around 120 trees were replaced and now we are processing another contract that will allow us to replace another 230 trees. We are constantly replacing trees, although it is true that Fuengirola is a very lively city and that there are places where some trees may be missing, but our intention is that little by little they will all be replaced.”
For her part, María Hernández has highlighted the notable improvement that one of the main arteries of the neighborhood such as Las Gaviotas Avenue has experienced in recent times, “where important actions have been carried out, such as the demolition of the pedestrian walkway, the improvement of accessibility throughout the environment, the repainting of the zebra crossings and now the replacement of the trees, which was a demand from the neighbors, and which we will soon also carry out on Carvajal Avenue.”
