Fuengirola libraries register more than 23,500 visitors in May and June 2026, 18% more than last year
The Councilor for Culture, Rodrigo Romero, has highlighted the increase in users, the high occupancy of the study rooms and the success of cultural activities
7/15/2026 – The Councilor for Culture of the Fuengirola City Council, Rodrigo Romero, held a press conference today to present the balance of activity of the Municipal Library Network during the months of May and June 2026, a period in which 23,549 visitors have been registered, which represents an increase of 18% compared to the same period in 2025.
Romero has valued these “excellent” results, which reflect “the magnificent performance of the libraries and the high participation registered in the proposed activities. In addition, the trend of the previous two two months is maintained, when an increase of 15% was also recorded compared to the same periods of the previous year.”
Among the most notable data, the mayor has highlighted those recorded in the Los Boliches study room, which has doubled its monthly use compared to previous months with 2,167 users in May and June, although the Javier Castillo study room of the Lope de Vega library continues to be the most used by Fuengirola students with a total of 8,752 users.
In addition, the total number of members of the library network continues to grow and now reaches 39,767 members, with 207 new members registered in May and June.
Success of activities
In these two months, 151 activities have been scheduled, compared to the 121 carried out in the same period of 2025. In addition, participants in them have experienced a significant increase of 24% compared to those registered in 2025.
In the month of May, the VIII Children’s and Young People’s Literature Conference and the Children’s and Young People’s Book Fair were held, which between them had a participation of 2,713 people.
In addition, on June 19, the children’s reading clubs were closed with the participation of the narrator Jackeline de Barros, as well as those for adults with the club coordinated by the writer Vicente Luis Mora of the novel ‘Nada’ to which all the reading clubs in the city attended.
Upcoming activities
Looking ahead to the coming months, the Fuengirola Library Network will continue to expand its programming with centers of interest and special activities on the occasion of different anniversaries, such as the 109th anniversary of the birth of Gloria Fuertes (July 28), the 83rd anniversary of Isabel Allende (August 2), the 151st anniversary of the death of Hans Cristian Andersen (August 4), the 90th anniversary of the death of Federico García Lorca (August 18), the World Day of Spiderman (August 1), the 109th anniversary of the birth of Jack Kirby, considered the ‘King of Comics’ (August 28) or the 95th anniversary of Scottish screenwriter Grant Morrison (August 8).
In addition, on July 28 and 29, the first anniversary of the opening to the public of the Gloria Fuertes Library in Los Boliches will be commemorated with several children’s activities that will take place in the aforementioned cultural facilities.
Romero concluded by encouraging Fuengirola residents to continue using the libraries and highlighted that the data recorded in May and June “confirm the good times that the Fuengirola library network is experiencing, which continues to grow both in users and activities and consolidating itself as a reference cultural space in the city.”
