7/3/2026 – Los Boliches beach will once again pay tribute to its seafaring tradition next Saturday, July 11, with a new staging of the codend throw, an ancient fishing art that for centuries was the livelihood of numerous families on the coast and that today, although it is no longer allowed, is preserved as part of the cultural and historical heritage of Fuengirola.
The recreation, organized by the Peña Recreativa Bolichera with the collaboration of the City Council, will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will take place on the stretch of beach between the boathouse and the Los Náufragos beach bar.
The deputy mayor of Los Boliches, Rosa Ana Bravo, has highlighted the value of this initiative, pointing out that “it is a tribute to all the families who for generations lived off the sea, not only in Fuengirola, but throughout the Costa del Sol. We are deeply proud of our seafaring roots, especially in Los Boliches, a neighborhood whose history is closely linked to the sea and fishing.”
The codend cast was one of the most characteristic fishing techniques on the Fuengirola coast until well into the 20th century. This system consisted of anchoring a net about 50 meters from the shore, joined by two ropes that were dragged from the beach by several people until the fish that had been trapped in the codend or bag of the net were collected.
Although this type of fishing stopped being practiced due to current regulations on fishing, the City Council recovered this tradition in 1995 on the occasion of the Fair in honor of Our Lady of Carmen, patron saint of Los Boliches. Since then, the reenactment is celebrated every year during the July festivities and is repeated again on August 15, becoming one of the most representative images of the local festive calendar.
For its celebration it has been necessary, as established by the regulations, the express authorization of the Junta de Andalucía, which has allowed the activity with the condition that all the specimens captured during the recreation are immediately returned to the sea.
Finally, Rosa Ana Bravo has encouraged neighbors and visitors to attend this event. “I invite Fuengirola residents and visitors to enjoy a very special morning in Los Boliches and get to know up close a tradition that is part of our identity and that allows us to keep alive the legacy of those who dedicated their lives to the sea,” he concluded.
