The Fuengirola City Council reinforces its commitment to sport by increasing the events held and places in schools

During the first half of the year, the city has hosted more than 80 events of all kinds and has surpassed the barrier of 5,000 registered in the different modalities offered. More than 20,000 people have participated in some of the competitions held in the city and more than 15,000 use the different municipal facilities monthly.

7/3/2026 – Fuengirola City Council reinforces its commitment to sport by increasing the events held and places in one of the 30 sports modalities offered by the Department. This is the balance that Mayor Ana Mula made today, together with the councilor for the sector, Julio Rodríguez, to explain that the City Council continues to promote the practice of good habits among its population, and in addition, it is a tool to promote the city and attract more and more visitors and economic dynamism.

“Fuengirola is sport and it is well-being. The commitment to sport on the part of the Government team is demonstrated by: the number of disciplines that we promote in municipal schools, the high number of users that we register each month in our municipal facilities (more than 15,000), with the high number of events in all areas that we host, with the continuous actions in terms of improvement and creation of new infrastructures, as well as with the resounding support to all our athletes through subsidies. We will continue betting on sport to promote well-being and enhance the good name of the Fuengirola Brand. We are committed to sport and to all our athletes,” said the councilor.

In this way, as detailed, the Department of Sports currently offers 30 sports schools of different sports modalities in 239 groups of different ages and levels. In this sense, Ana Mula has highlighted that in this period the 5,000 municipal places have been exceeded (specifically, 5,064), which is “a record of Fuengirola residents registered in our sports modalities.” There are 136 more people than last year.

A good part of its students are part of the more than 15,000 people who pass through the different municipal sports facilities each month, according to data from the Department.

In terms of events, those responsible for the area have increased the holding of tournaments, exhibitions and other types of competitions to the number of 87 during the first six months of 2026. Among the notable events are the Avance Global Cup of Basketball – with the presence of the future world stars of the basketball sport -, the first day of the Finnish Baseball League, the Spanish Minibasket or Figure Skating championships, or the Andalusian Gymnastics championships Rhythmic in the promise and pre-cup categories, among many others. In this sense, Mula has also highlighted the celebration of the Fuengirola City Triathlon.

20,771 people from different countries and Spanish communities have participated in these events and 45,368 attendees have been counted, “generating dynamism in our local economic fabric,” as the mayor pointed out.

Better infrastructure

Another aspect that the highest Fuengirola authority has emphasized has been the “continuous” actions in terms of improvement and creation of new infrastructures. During the first half of the year, the Government team has promoted an investment close to one million euros to renew the skylights of the pavilions of the sports centers of the Elola Complex, the reform and improvement of the accessibility of the entrance to the administrative offices of the complex from Miguel Bueno Street, the replacement of the false ceilings of the changing rooms of the David Meca pool and has put out to tender the first phase of the remodeling of the aforementioned aquatic venue.

Finally, the president has indicated that one more way to demonstrate the commitment of the institution she directs to Fuengirola athletes are subsidies to clubs and practitioners of some discipline at a professional level. In this case, as specified, during this year 77 files have been processed, two more than last year. The municipal investment in this section is 220,000 euros, 20,000 euros more than last year.
