Fuengirola increased its selective waste collection figures in 2025

Last year, the removal of MSW increased by 2% and both the collection of containers and cardboard increased by more than 5%, while glass equaled the figures of the previous year.

9/2/2026 – Fuengirola increased its selective waste collection figures in 2025, as reported this morning by the Councilor for Cleaning, Carmen Díaz. The mayor has indicated that during the past year the removal of Urban Solid Waste (MSW) increased by 2% and both the collection of packaging and paper and cardboard increased by more than 5%, while glass remained at similar figures to those of the previous year.

“For Fuengirola it is a challenge to continue growing in terms of selective collection. On the one hand, because we are aware that we must be a sustainable city and we work on numerous campaigns to increase domestic recycling figures; and on the other, because the entry price of organic waste at the plant doubled last year and we already pay 85 euros for each ton. If we manage to separate plastic, cardboard and glass from organic waste, its weight will be much lower and the bill will not increase as much. In other words, it is also something beneficial. from an economic point of view,” he explained.

In this sense, the mayor has pointed out that, to continue improving selective collection data, “we need the collaboration of the residents of Fuengirola and also the restaurant businesses.”

Regarding the data recorded last year, Carmen Díaz highlighted that “we have increased practically all waste collection fractions.” Thus, the removal of MSW reached a total of 36,155 tons, which is 2% more than in 2024. In the case of light packaging, as in the collection of paper and cardboard, an increase of 5% was recorded, with a total of 3,273 tons of packaging and more than 1,900 tons of paper and cardboard collected.

The pending issue, according to Díaz, has been the collection of glass, which remained at similar levels to those of the previous year, with a total of 2,404 tons removed. “For this reason we have to continue working to increase these figures, since glass is the material that weighs the most and, if we separate it from the collection of organic waste, it will also mean greater savings when we move it to the Costa del Sol environmental complex,” he concluded.
