1/29/2026 – Fuengirola Free Area will be the setting, on February 5, for the celebration of the II School Orienteering Games, a sports and educational initiative aimed at high school and 5th and 6th grade primary school students in the city. The event will take place between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and will have the participation of 915 schoolchildren.

This was announced this morning by the Councilors for Sports and Education, Julio Rodríguez and Carmen Díaz, respectively, together with José Andrés Guerrero, representative of the Málaga Orienteering Club ‘COMA’, a collaborating entity in the organization of the activity.

The Councilor for Sports, Julio Rodríguez, has highlighted the success of this initiative, which was recovered last year with an excellent reception from educational centers. “Orientation games encourage teamwork and the development of both physical and cognitive skills. In addition, it is an activity that is already part of the school curriculum in many centers,” he explained. In this sense, he pointed out that participants will compete in groups of four or five students, using a map to orient themselves and follow a route marked with beacons.

For her part, the Councilor for Education, Carmen Díaz, has highlighted the high participation, with more than 900 students enrolled, and has valued the joint work of the areas of Education and Sports. “At the City Council we are committed to a transversal approach that allows us to offer educational centers a comprehensive training program, focused not only on academic content, but also on education in values, camaraderie and the personal development of students,” he noted.

The representative of the COMA Club, José Andrés Guerrero, has been very satisfied with the response obtained in this second edition. “Last year around 700 schoolchildren participated and this year we have broken the record with 915 registered, which demonstrates the growing interest in this sport,” he indicated.

Guerrero has also highlighted the educational value of orientation, as it is a discipline that combines physical activity and learning. “These tests are previously worked on in subjects such as Physical Education or Environmental Knowledge, helping students to develop spatial orientation, autonomy in the environment and decision making,” he explained.

Regarding the development of the day, the club representative has detailed that the activity will be divided into two phases: a first theoretical explanation on the use and interpretation of the map and, subsequently, the execution of the routes. These will be adapted to the age and level of the participants, who must complete the itinerary passing through the different checkpoints in the shortest time possible.
