1/30/2026 – Fuengirola City Council has started an information campaign aimed at businesses in the city with the aim of promoting the use of the free door-to-door cardboard collection service. The initiative was presented this morning by the Councilor for Cleaning, Carmen Díaz, together with the councilor responsible for the central area, the area in which this information action has begun to be developed, Cristina Bornao.
The Councilor for Cleaning has highlighted that “from the Fuengirola City Council we have the firm determination to put an end to the cardboard that is deposited outside the ecological islands. We are one of the municipalities that recycles the most and we are committed to a sustainable city model, which translates into measures that facilitate recycling, such as this free cardboard collection service for commerce.”
In this sense, Díaz explained that, despite having ecological islands distributed throughout the city, “they frequently become saturated and the cardboard ends up being left outside, which generates a negative image and, in addition, is classified as an infraction in the Municipal Cleaning Ordinance.” For this reason, he has insisted that businesses have a convenient and effective alternative to manage this waste correctly.
As detailed by the mayor, this service provides multiple benefits: “firstly, it offers businesses a completely free municipal service; secondly, it contributes to keeping the ecological islands clean and clear; and, finally, it avoids possible sanctions derived from non-compliance with current regulations.”

For her part, the councilor for the central area, Cristina Bornao, has highlighted the importance of promoting awareness campaigns aimed at both merchants and citizens in general. In this sense, he has called “on our neighbors to make proper use of cardboard containers, folding the boxes correctly, since on many occasions the mailboxes are blocked and the cardboard ends up accumulating outside.”
Finally, Bornao has appealed for everyone’s collaboration to “take care of our neighborhoods and keep them in the best possible conditions”, remembering that “the cleaning staff makes a very important daily effort, so it is essential that we do our part when it comes to recycling and correctly depositing waste.”
