The City Council finalizes the development of the Sohail Castle park after the closure of Marenostrum Fuengirola

The space will reopen to the public next week, after some maintenance and improvement work, and a new phase of archaeological excavations will begin in the Roman City of Suel

10/23/2025 – The Fuengirola City Council is completing the work to condition and improve the Sohail Castle park, one of the most emblematic enclaves of the city. This green space, located in the western area, will reopen its doors to the public next week, once the maintenance tasks carried out after the closing of the tenth edition of the Marenostrum Fuengirola concert series have been completed.

The Councilor for Culture and Major Events, Rodrigo Romero, highlighted that the objective of these actions is “to enhance an environment that combines heritage, culture and citizen enjoyment.” In this sense, the councilor has announced that next month a new phase of excavation will begin in the Roman City of Suel, with an expected duration of five years, which will allow the investigation and enhancement of the site to continue.

Romero has stressed that the Sohail Castle site houses three fundamental uses: the large events and concerts of the Marenostrum Fuengirola, archaeological research tasks and daily use as a public park. “Our objective is that the fortress and its surroundings continue to be a cultural, historical and social reference for Fuengirola,” he stated.

Among the improvements that are being carried out are the optimization of the irrigation system and the adaptation of infrastructure intended for concerts, which will reduce assembly and disassembly times and extend the period of opening of the park to the public, “allowing this space to be open to the public for as long as possible.”

The councilor recalled that the current edition of Marenostrum Fuengirola concluded in September with a concert by the artist Mora, and that the next one will start at the end of April with the return, after 28 years, of El Último de la Fila. To facilitate the development of this programming, the area designated for offices and services will be delimited and signposted throughout the year, taking advantage of the least used area of the premises.

“In this way, the park can be enjoyed for more months without interfering with the staging of the events and we will continue to consolidate this space as a cultural and tourist reference in the city,” concluded Romero.
