Fuengirola City Council promotes more sustainable tourism with new environmental and technological actions
Actions included in Axis 1 of the Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan are the installation of plant awnings at taxi stops, the creation of Clean Air Corridors and a specific waste collection service in tourist areas.
7/9/2026 – Fuengirola City Council continues to move towards a more sustainable tourism model with the execution of new environmental and technological actions included in Axis 1: Green and Sustainable Transition, of the Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan. This was announced today by the Councilor for Innovation, Isabel González, who explained that this axis concentrates 16.56% of the total budget of the plan and seeks to “make Fuengirola a destination that is more respectful of the environment and better prepared to face the challenges of the future, without losing sight of the well-being of our neighbors and the quality of the experience of those who visit us.”
The councilor stressed that these actions “are not isolated initiatives, but rather give continuity to the work that the City Council has been developing for years in terms of sustainability, accessibility, tourism quality and digital transformation.” In this sense, he recalled that the Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan is supported by strategic planning that includes projects such as the Strategic Plan for Accessible Tourism, the Municipal Tourism Quality Plan, the Tourism Sustainability Report 2022-2024, the Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development Strategy (EDUSI) or the Smart Tourist Destination Action Plan prepared by SEGITTUR.
Among the actions, the installation of plant awnings at different taxi stops in the municipality stands out, a measure based on natural solutions that reduces the impact of high temperatures, improves the comfort of users and professionals in the sector and contributes to the city’s adaptation to climate change.
Another of the most innovative initiatives is the creation of the Clean Air Corridors, a pioneering project that incorporates environmental purification technology in one of the city’s main transportation nodes. This action improves air quality in an area with a high influx of people and reinforces the municipal commitment to innovation applied to sustainability.
Likewise, the City Council has launched a specific waste collection service in the main tourist areas with the highest concentration of hospitality, restaurant and commercial establishments. This measure complements the municipal biowaste collection system, promotes recycling and contributes to maintaining a cleaner and more cared for image of the destination.
«Sustainability goes far beyond protecting the environment. It also means offering public spaces of higher quality, improving the lives of our neighbors and making those who choose Fuengirola enjoy a more comfortable, healthy and competitive destination,” said González.
The councilor highlighted that the Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan constitutes “a fundamental tool to continue transforming the city from a sustainable perspective, aligned with the objectives of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and financed with Next Generation funds from the European Union.”
“We are going to continue promoting actions that allow us to consolidate a quality, innovative and environmentally friendly tourism model, generating environmental, social and economic benefits for the entire city,” concluded the municipal official.
