6/17/2026 – The Fuengirola City Council, through the Departments of Families, Equality and Social Welfare and Commerce, will hold a gender and sexual violence prevention workshop on June 19 aimed at professionals in commerce, hospitality and nightlife in the municipality. The activity will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Royal Hall of the Consistory and will be taught by the criminologist and specialist in gender violence and sexual violence Álvaro Botias.

The initiative is part of the municipal campaign ‘Fuengirola Safe and Free of Sexist Violence’, with which the City Council seeks to promote spaces for coexistence, leisure and work that are safer, more inclusive and committed to equality.

The Councilor for Families, Equality and Social Welfare, Cristina Bornao, has highlighted the importance of involving the entire society in the prevention of this type of behavior. “With this action we want to offer a community response to sexual violence and continue advancing in the construction of a safer, more respectful and egalitarian city. To do this we have a reference professional like Álvaro Botias, who has previously collaborated in the training of municipal personnel, Local Police and social entities in our city,” he noted.

The workshop will have an eminently practical and participatory nature. During the session, aspects related to the identification of different forms of sexual violence will be addressed, especially those that can occur in leisure contexts and public spaces. Likewise, guidelines will be offered to detect risk situations, recognize normalized behaviors and learn tools for action, support and accompaniment to possible victims.

For his part, the Councilor for Commerce, Francisco Javier García Lara, has encouraged businessmen, self-employed workers and establishment managers to participate in this training. “Our shops, bars, restaurants and leisure venues are spaces for meeting and coexistence that can play a fundamental role in the early detection of situations of violence. We want their professionals to have knowledge and tools that allow them to act appropriately in any circumstance that requires help or intervention,” he explained.

In this sense, García Lara has stressed that training is not only useful in the professional field, but also in the personal and social sphere, since it helps to raise awareness about a reality that continues to affect many women and to promote a culture based on respect, consent and equality.

The workshop will be taught by Álvaro Botias Benedit, criminologist and doctoral student in Interdisciplinary Gender and Equality Studies at the University of Salamanca, specialized in gender violence and sexual violence.

This activity is part of the municipal strategy to promote safer leisure spaces free of sexist violence, reinforcing the involvement of the different economic and social sectors in the prevention of these behaviors and in the creation of environments where all people can enjoy themselves with freedom, tranquility and security.
