The Fuengirola City Council promotes the conservation of four emblematic murals from the city’s Open Museum

The works ‘Eriana’, by Manuel Barbadillo; ‘The fisherman’s greeting’, by José María Córdoba; ‘Screens’, by Alfonso Fraile; and ‘Liberation’, by Julio Le Parc will be restored to guarantee their preservation. The works, which have already been put out to tender for an amount of 242,000 euros, provide continuity to the actions recently carried out on the murals by Pedro Escalona and Enrique Brinkmann

6/17/2026 – Fuengirola City Council, through the Culture Area, has initiated the procedure for the conservation and restoration of four of the most representative murals of the city’s Open Museum. These are the works ‘Eriana’, by Manuel Barbadillo; ‘The fisherman’s greeting’, by José María Córdoba; ‘Screens’, by Alfonso Fraile; and ‘Liberación’, by Julio Le Parc, pieces that are part of one of the most unique urban art projects in Andalusia. This was announced by the Councilor for Culture, Rodrigo Romero, who has highlighted the municipal commitment to the preservation of local artistic heritage.

“A few years ago we commissioned a study to find out the state of conservation of all the murals in the Open Museum. They are works that have been around for more than four decades exposed to the elements and, logically, suffer wear and tear caused by the passage of time, the action of the sun, rain or pollution. Our objective is to guarantee their conservation so that they continue to be part of the urban and cultural landscape of Fuengirola,” he explained.

This action continues the restoration plan started last year with the recovery of the murals made by Enrique Brinkmann and Pedro Escalona. In this new phase, intervention will be carried out on four works that present different levels of deterioration and that require specific actions to recover their original colors, stabilize their materials and ensure their correct conservation.

The works have already been put out to tender with a total budget of 242,000 euros and a completion period of eight months. Interested companies may submit their offers until June 23.

“They are works of great artistic and historical value that are part of the cultural identity of our city. We want them to recover all their splendor and continue to be a reference for neighbors and visitors,” said Romero.

The interventions will be carried out on the ‘Eriana’ murals, located at the confluence of Mijas Avenue with Juan Gómez ‘Juanito’ Avenue; ‘Pantallas’, located on Condes de San Isidro Avenue; ‘Liberación’, located next to the Hotel Las Palmeras; and ‘The Fisherman’s Greeting’, which is located on Juan Gómez ‘Juanito’ Avenue.

The Fuengirola Open Museum was born in 1982 as a pioneering initiative to integrate contemporary art into public spaces and bring it closer to citizens. Over the years it has become one of the most characteristic elements of the local urban landscape, bringing together works by prominent Spanish artists of recognized prestige.

In addition to their artistic value, these pieces are cataloged as elements of cultural and environmental interest in the General Urban Planning Plan (PGOU) of Fuengirola, which reinforces the need to guarantee their adequate conservation for future generations.
