The Mayor’s Office of El Boquetillo hosts this Thursday, June 4, the talk-workshop ‘How to save a swift?’
It will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will be taught by Silvia Montero, veterinarian and expert in this species of birds.
6/1/2026 – The Councilor for Urban Ecology of Fuengirola, José Sánchez, reported this morning on the talk-workshop ‘How to save a swift?’, which will be given by the veterinary expert in this species of birds, Silvia Montero, this Thursday, June 4, starting at 6:00 p.m., at the Mayor’s Office of El Boquetillo, with free admission until capacity is reached.
“Finding a small swift on the ground is a more common situation than it seems and many neighbors want to help them but they do not always know how to act correctly and that, even if done with good intentions, can put the life of this protected bird at risk,” explained Sánchez, who has invited the residents of Fuengirola to participate in this free talk.
The councilor highlighted that the objective is for this activity to be the starting point of a network of volunteers committed to the protection of the swift, “who know how to act when they find a fallen specimen and can help it until it receives adequate care.”
Regarding the importance of this bird, Sánchez explained that it is a key species for maintaining environmental balance in cities, since “each swift can consume between ten thousand and twenty thousand insects a day, naturally contributing to maintaining a healthy environmental environment.”
On the other hand, the mayor has pointed out that a swift “only stops flying when it is nesting and, when we see one of them on the ground, it means that it needs help. Therefore, a well-informed neighbor can make a difference and at Fuengirola City Council we believe that the protection of biodiversity is a task shared by everyone.”
This activity is part of the Fuengirola Urban Biodiversity Improvement Plan, integrated into the Municipal Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change, within which actions have already been developed such as the installation of nest boxes for insectivorous birds, shelters for bats, hotels for pollinating insects and the progressive reduction of the use of chemicals in municipal green areas. “In addition, we have already begun to install specific nest boxes for swifts in different parts of the municipality such as the Finland Avenue bridge or the Paseo Fluvial and we have also given educational awareness talks in different schools in the town and we have collaboratively made nest boxes for birds with the students that we will later install in these centers so that the little ones also feel involved in the maintenance of biodiversity in our municipality.”
To conclude, José Sánchez encouraged people to attend this talk and be part of the citizen network for the protection of the swift, “to continue moving together towards a more sustainable Fuengirola that is respectful of the natural environment.”
