5/25/2026 – The Councilor for Culture of the Fuengirola City Council, Rodrigo Romero, has encouraged residents to participate in the cultural and informative events organized to mark the 185th anniversary of the constitution of Fuengirola as an independent municipality. The programming will take place throughout this week and will culminate next Friday, May 29, with an institutional event and a concert in the Plaza de España.

“This Friday we are going to celebrate the anniversary of our emancipation from Mijas, when we recovered, many centuries later, the condition of an autonomous municipality. It will be at eight thirty in the afternoon in the Plaza de España, where we will hold an event to remember our origins and highlight the history of our city,” said Romero.

The central event of the anniversary will begin at 8:30 p.m. and will feature the projection of a commemorative video about this historical event and the evolution of Fuengirola from its constitution as a municipality in 1841 to the present.

After the intervention of the mayor, Ana Mula, representing all Fuengirola residents, the Municipal Music Band will offer a concert open to the public. Attendance will be free of charge.

school visits

The commemorative program previously started today, Monday, May 25, with guided school visits to the murals of the ‘Somos España’ sculpture project, inaugurated a year ago. The authors of the works themselves, Paco Pérez and Charo García, are in charge of explaining to the Primary and Secondary students the artistic and historical details of this initiative.

In addition, the Department of Culture has published a series of educational booklets aimed at students to delve deeper into the content of these artistic pieces and the history of Spain and Fuengirola. English versions have also been prepared, which will be distributed in different points of tourist interest in the city.

The program will conclude next Tuesday, June 2, with a conference on the historical origin of the first settlements and civilizations of the city, which will be given by the archaeological director of the Roman City of Suel, Verónica Navarrete. The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Royal Hall of the Fuengirola City Council, with free entry until capacity is reached.

The anniversary that is commemorated corresponds to the emancipation of Fuengirola from the municipality of Mijas, a historical event that took place on May 30, 1841. “I invite all Fuengirola residents to join us this Friday in the Plaza de España to celebrate a date as important and significant for our city as the 185th anniversary of the signing of the act of emancipation of Mijas,” concluded Romero.
