The Fuengirola City Council advances the works of the New Mercacentro with the assembly of the wooden structure
After finishing the basement and the foundations of the ground floor, the work now focuses on the execution of the first floor. Sustainable materials are being used following an avant-garde and innovative design
4/22/2026 – Fuengirola City Council is advancing the works of the New Mercacentro with the assembly of the wooden structure. Mayor Ana Mula and the Councilor for Strategic Infrastructure, Rocío Arriaga, visited today the transformation work of this building.
In this way, after finishing the basement, the work has become more visible on the outside with the installation of the wood that will serve as the structure of this building. These have already been completed on the ground floor and now the workers are working on the first floor.

In this sense, Mula has pointed out that during the initial process of its execution, on the occasion of the demolition of the previous building, the technicians detected unforeseen problems in the basement floor. The management of the work and the municipal technicians determined the cessation of the work to know its scope and modify the original project with the aim of guaranteeing the stability and safety of the future equipment. These circumstances forced a delay in the execution period.
Likewise, during today’s visit, the top municipal official expressed her concern with the pace of the work, “which should be much faster.” For this reason, it has demanded from the Temporary Union of Prodesur-Jocón-Itercon Companies “greater speed” to make this infrastructure a reality.
Regarding the characteristics of the building, its frame and structure will be built with Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), which is an industrialized and treated wood that works very well in places with constant temperature and humidity, such as Fuengirola. It is the most ecological material of all the construction systems possible at the moment.
With it, according to the designers, all the international seals of sustainability, ecological quality, European directives, as well as the A energy rating will be achieved, turning the New Mercacentro into a Almost Zero Consumption Building (ECCN).

Likewise, the architectural approach establishes that it will be distributed over several floors: a parking basement for customers, as well as another for loading and unloading trucks; the ground floor, which will have three large entrances and where the 39 market stalls will be distributed, as well as a central hall covered with a skylight; the first floor, in which commercial premises will be distributed to create gastrobars and a business incubator; and a second and last floor where there will be a terrace open to the public. The total constructed area will exceed 11,000 square meters. Universal accessibility will be guaranteed at all levels.
The City Council has been working on this project for more than five years. First, by gathering the agreement of all the concessionaire stall holders in this facility. Then, in 2019, calling a competition for designer ideas on which to base the future project. After bidding for its drafting and having the required document, the works to execute it were put out to tender. Its cost is 14,001,934 euros.
