3/12/2026 – The Fuengirola Local Police maintains active surveillance of 67 women victims of sexist violence through the national protection system, known as VioGen. Mayor Ana Mula, together with the Councilor for Citizen Security, José Luis Ponce, and the Councilor for Social Welfare, Equality and Families, Cristina Bornao, held a meeting today with those responsible for this Police Unit to show their support and reinforce its operation.
“Fuengirola is a city committed to equality and the fight against sexist violence. Since I have been part of the city Government we have demonstrated this with actions. We were a pioneering City Council in Spain with the creation of the Department of Equality, as well as with the creation of the Municipal Service for Attention to Women. There are no ambiguities in this matter. Although it is not the responsibility of the Local Police, our agents are always at the disposal of the National Police to combat this social scourge and protect the women who go through this bad experience,” explained the councilor.

In this way, the VioGen Unit of the Fuengirola Local Police has two agents dedicated to this service, as well as a coordinator. Currently, according to this collaboration agreement between public administrations, Fuengirola has 199 active cases, of which 34% have been awarded to the Local Police.
The tasks of these agents consist, roughly speaking, of the periodic attention to all cases, through personal interviews, inclusion in the national database, as well as discreet surveillance of both the complainants themselves and their aggressors.
Since the middle of last year, in addition, the agents have been following a new model of action, in coordination with the National Police, which has modified the risk levels and their categorization, has reinforced the control measures on all cases to expand monitoring and has amplified the interconnection with other institutions, such as with the department of Municipal Social Services, with whose technicians they hold regular meetings to improve assistance to victims of gender violence and their families.
Any threat or situation of lack of protection can be reported to telephone 016 or directly to the Local Police at 092 or 952 58 09 00.
In this sense, the highest Fuengirola authority has valued the work done by this group of the Local Police in favor of the protection of these women and the fight against sexist violence. At the same time, he recalled that the Fuengirola City Council has a Municipal Care Center for Women, located in the Colores building. It offers psychological and legal advice services, which are interconnected, precisely, with the VioGen Unit of the Fuengirola Local Police.
As an example, the Municipal Women’s Care Center served more than 1,200 women last year in 2022, either to receive psychological or legal advice. Of them, almost 500 went to this service for issues related to gender violence.
