Fuengirola reinforces street cleaning with innovative technological and digital tools

The new system will improve control, efficiency and intelligent management of the service through the implementation of NFC technology in more than 2,400 litter bins in the city.

2/18/2026 – Fuengirola reinforces street cleaning with a commitment to technological innovation, incorporating new digital tools that will allow optimizing public resources, improving service control and moving towards a more efficient, sustainable and intelligent city model.

The mayor of Fuengirola, Ana Mula, together with the Councilor for Cleaning, Carmen Díaz, presented today on the seafront a new initiative based on the implementation of NFC technology in the municipality’s urban litter bins, framed within the constant investment made by the City Council to improve public services.

The action consists of the placement of NFC (Near Field Communication) tags that allow each bin to be identified and geopositioned, as well as to automatically record all the actions carried out by the operators, such as emptying, cleaning or maintenance. This technology will facilitate more precise planning, greater service control and real and verifiable monitoring of daily work.

During the presentation, Ana Mula pointed out that “cleanliness is one of the aspects that both residents and visitors value most, and one of the main reasons why Fuengirola is a reference tourist destination.” In this sense, he highlighted that “this recognition is the result of a significant municipal investment, constant planning and the extraordinary daily work of the cleaning service operators.”

The mayor stressed that “betting on innovation means betting on a better quality of life for our citizens”, adding that “small technological advances like this allow us to take big steps towards a smarter, better managed city with a more efficient use of public resources”.

Currently, the system has already been implemented in 1,400 bins, corresponding to 21 cleaning sectors of the city, and in the coming weeks nearly 1,000 more labels will be installed, reaching a total of more than 2,400 bins equipped with this technology. Each intervention will be automatically recorded in the service management platform, which will improve efficiency, sustainability and transparency.

Mula concluded by highlighting that “cleanliness is not only a matter of image, but also of quality of life, coexistence and city pride”, reaffirming the City Council’s commitment to continue investing in innovation to maintain Fuengirola as a benchmark in cleanliness and urban quality.
