Fuengirola City Council completes the first phase of the Local Police with a “very positive” balance of security and neighborhood proximity

It is an initiative included in the Municipal Security Plan that reinforces the presence of officers on foot in the neighborhoods in the mornings and in parks and squares during the afternoon

10/2/2026 – Fuengirola City Council has completed the first phase of the new Neighborhood Police device, a model that reinforces the presence of officers on foot in the neighborhoods and which, in a few weeks of operation, has made it possible to improve security, strengthen trust with neighbors and detect specific incidents for the entire City Council.

This was announced today by the Councilor for Citizen Security, José Luis Ponce, who has detailed that, in this first stage, Cercanía agents have developed service from Monday to Friday, in the morning, visiting all the neighborhoods of the city: Centro, Los Boliches-Los Pacos, Boquetillo, San Cayetano, Recinto Ferial-Plaza de la Hispanidad-Núcleos, Torreblanca-Carvajal, Miramar-Virgen del Carmen and Las Huts.

During these days, dozens of interviews have been carried out with businesses, hospitality establishments, municipal services, pharmacies, markets, gyms and residents, which have allowed us to take the real pulse of the city, neighborhood by neighborhood.

“The Local Police do not go out for a walk, they go out to listen, see and solve problems. The merchants themselves tell us that they see more police and fewer conflicts, and that is the best proof that the device works,” said the Councilor for Citizen Security.

More security and fewer conflicts at sensitive points

Service reports reflect that the majority perception of merchants is of tranquility and security in their neighborhoods. In areas that were initially of greater concern, such as the surroundings of the Plaza de la Hispanidad and the Núcleos, Jesús Cautivo Avenue in Los Boliches or specific points in the Center, those responsible for the businesses have reported that the presence of homeless people and drug addicts has decreased and coexistence has improved, expressly highlighting the greater police presence.

In addition to this preventive work, the Local Police has developed relevant operational actions, such as: traffic control and road safety; control of caravans and motorhomes at the Fairgrounds; detection of urban planning and public highway violations, such as unlicensed works or improper occupation of the street; and assistance to vulnerable people, such as elderly people who have suffered falls at home or people who are drunk in public, in coordination with health services and telecare.

A radar for the entire City Council

Beyond strict security, the Local Police have become a daily “radar” for the rest of the municipal areas. The agents have been collecting and transferring to the competent council departments very specific incidents related to issues such as street cleaning and ecological islands, detecting points where belongings and cardboard were accumulated, inadequate deposits or the need to reinforce washing, along with many examples of containers in good condition that confirm the proper functioning of the service.

They have also detected incidents related to public lighting: several streets and squares where residents perceive a lack of lighting or excessively dark areas, which are already being reviewed by the lighting area. Likewise, they have reported incidents related to mobility, such as parking problems, recurring double lines, impracticable loading and unloading reservations or conflictive crossings; as well as problems related to coexistence in public spaces, such as the occasional presence of polydrug addicts, complaints about urine or noise, inappropriate use of VMPs and motorcycles on sidewalks, or disturbances at certain times.

All this information is being systematically transferred to the areas of Cleaning, Lighting, Mobility, Infrastructure, Social Services and other departments, so that the Proximity plan not only improves security, but also the overall management of the city. “The important thing is not only to detect problems, but to return later to the same places and check if the solutions work. Thanks to the Proximity Police we are closing that circle: listen, act and verify,” the councilor stressed.

The mayor considers that the balance of this first phase is “very positive”, since the city is confirmed “as a safe and reasonably orderly environment, trust is reinforced between the Local Police, merchants and neighbors, and a very precise map of vulnerabilities and strengths by neighborhood is now available.”

The next phase of the plan will consist of adjusting routes, reinforcing the neighborhoods that need it most and continuing to use the service reports as a coordination tool with the rest of the municipal areas, always maintaining the same objective: a close, visible and useful police force that improves the daily life of Fuengirola residents.
