The Fuengirola City Council reinforces road safety with controls on the use of scooters and an awareness campaign

So far this year, the Local Police has filed nearly 600 complaints for non-compliance related to the use of these personal mobility vehicles.

11/27/2025 – Fuengirola City Council is reinforcing road safety in the city with specific and random controls on the use of scooters and an awareness and information campaign on the traffic rules that users of these personal mobility vehicles must comply with. This was announced this morning by the Councilor for Mobility, Isabel González, during a press conference in which she highlighted the growing presence of these vehicles in daily urban life.

“The use of the electric scooter increases every year as a fast, efficient and comfortable alternative to get around the city. However, this growth also represents a challenge, because it is just another vehicle and, as such, it must comply with traffic regulations,” González stressed. In this sense, he recalled that these vehicles cannot circulate on sidewalks or pedestrian streets, and that their use is restricted exclusively to the road.

The councilor has indicated that, so far this year, nearly 600 complaints have been filed for non-compliance related to the use of electric scooters. “These figures reflect that we are aware of the problem and the need to inform and raise awareness among users to guarantee safe and responsible use of these vehicles,” he stated. To this end, the City Council is developing this campaign in collaboration with the Local Police, which is carrying out specific and random controls in different parts of the city to verify compliance with traffic regulations.

González has stressed that these controls are essentially preventive in nature: “We want to make it very clear that there is no desire to collect taxes; on the contrary, the objective is to inform and remind people who use scooters of their obligations as users of a vehicle.”

The councilor has also announced that, as of January 2026, new requirements will come into force for users of electric scooters, including the obligation to have civil liability insurance and the registration of the vehicle in the registry of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT). These measures are added to those already in force, such as the prohibition of exceeding 25 km/h, traveling on sidewalks or transporting two people on the same scooter.

“At the City Council, we also want to advance in terms of safety and we are working on a new municipal ordinance to establish the mandatory use of helmets, an essential element of protection,” he added.

González concluded by thanking the citizen collaboration and the work of the Local Police: “Our objective is to reinforce road safety and move towards a safer and more orderly city. Thanks to everyone’s commitment, we will be able to guarantee responsible use of electric scooters and live better together on our streets.”
