The Fuengirola City Council and Gestagua expand the campaign to promote the responsible use of the stormwater network
Under the motto ‘The sea begins here’, metal plaques are being installed next to the sewers to remember the direct connection between the streets and the sea. In the first stage, a hundred whale-shaped plates were installed and now another hundred turtle-shaped plates are being placed.
10/24/2025 – Fuengirola City Council, in collaboration with the concessionaire company Gestagua, continues to develop the citizen awareness campaign to promote responsible use of the stormwater drainage network and protect the marine environment. The initiative consists of placing metal plates next to the city’s sewers. The first hundred plates were in the shape of a whale and now another hundred in the shape of a turtle are being placed. These plaques are engraved with the message “The sea begins here”, with the aim of reminding residents that all waste thrown onto the ground or into scuppers ultimately ends up in the sea, affecting the beaches and the coastal ecosystem.
The Councilor for Infrastructure and Urban Ecology, José Sánchez, together with the manager of Gestagua, Enrique Sánchez, reported this morning on the initiative, highlighting the importance of involving citizens in caring for the environment.
“At the Fuengirola City Council we continue to support sustainability. This campaign seeks to raise awareness among residents that the waste we throw into the sewers ends up in the sea,” explained the mayor, also recalling that, “every year, from the Departments of Beaches and Urban Ecology we promote various coastal cleaning actions, where a large amount of waste is collected, many of them coming from the sewage network. Therefore, it is essential reinforce environmental education and individual responsibility.”
With this campaign, Fuengirola City Council reaffirms its commitment to environmental protection, urban cleaning and coastal conservation, promoting greater ecological awareness among residents and visitors.
