Fuengirola City Council reinforces road safety with new traffic calming measures

Three new speed control radars and eight gauges have been installed at strategic points in the municipality. They join other initiatives launched such as the installation of elevated pedestrian crossings or the reinforcement of road signage

7/8/2026 – Fuengirola City Council continues to reinforce road safety with the incorporation of new measures aimed at controlling the speed of vehicles and promoting traffic calming. Specifically, the City Council has installed three new speed control radars and eight gauges, or pedagogical radars, in different strategic points of the city, an action that is added to other initiatives launched by the Government team such as the installation of raised pedestrian crossings, the increase in police controls or the improvement of road signage.

This was announced this morning by the Councilor for Mobility, Isabel González, during a visit to Mijas Avenue, where one of the new educational radars is located in charge of informing drivers of the speed at which they are traveling.

“We continue to promote traffic calming measures to make Fuengirola a safer, more sustainable and also more intelligent city, incorporating technological tools that allow us to respond effectively to the challenges of urban mobility,” said the mayor, who stressed that “road safety is a priority for this Government team and, therefore, we continue to expand both technical and human resources to adapt to new needs.”

In this sense, González explained that these actions are part of the ‘Fuengirola More Tourism: for a more sustainable and intelligent destination’ project, financed by the European Union through the Next Generation EU funds, within the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and the Tourism Sustainability Plans in Destination, which contemplate the implementation of new technological solutions to increase traffic safety and efficiency.

Among the main measures, the installation of three new speed control radars located on Ramón y Cajal Avenue, at the intersection with San José Street, stands out; Las Gaviotas Avenue, and the Paseo Marítimo, on the corner with General Rodrigo Street. These devices are incorporated into the three existing ones, practically doubling the permanent speed control points in the city.

The municipal official also recalled that these systems are added to the traffic management network of the Local Police, which has more than 200 cameras distributed throughout the municipality. “This system provides us with real-time information on mobility, allowing agents to act quickly and effectively in the event of any incident that may occur,” he indicated.

Along with these radars, the City Council has installed eight new gauges or pedagogical radars, devices that do not have a sanctioning nature and whose purpose is to inform drivers of the speed at which they are traveling, encouraging respect for the established limits and promoting safer driving.

“These educational radars are mobile, so they will remain installed for a few weeks in the same location before moving to other parts of the municipality, taking into account both the intensity of traffic and the needs detected by municipal services and the requests submitted by the residents themselves,” González explained.

The councilor concluded by highlighting that all these actions pursue the same objective: “to promote a safe coexistence between pedestrians and drivers and to continue improving mobility in Fuengirola so that residents, visitors and users of our roads can move with the maximum guarantees of safety.”
