Fuengirola, awarded for the seventh consecutive year with Blue Flags on all its beaches
In addition, the Environmental Education Association has awarded two special mentions: for accessibility and for adaptation to ‘solvable’ sun protection measures. The entire Fuengirola coast has received the distinction on eleven occasions that recognizes the quality of services and the sustainability of this natural environment.
6/5/2026 – Fuengirola has achieved, for the seventh consecutive year, that 100% of its beaches are awarded Blue Flags. Furthermore, the entity that manages these distinctions in Spain, the Environmental and Consumer Education Association (ADEAC), has awarded two special mentions: for accessibility and for adaptation to ‘solvable’ sun protection measures.
It is the eleventh time that the entire Fuengirola coast has been awarded this prestigious international award. Specifically, this achievement has occurred in the years 2009, 2010, 2017, 2018 and consecutively, from 2020 to the present. These standards highlight aspects such as the good condition of the sandy beaches, the services provided there, accessibility, environmental management, as well as the properties of the waters of the entire Fuengirola coast.
The process for obtaining Blue Flags monitors the suitability of the beaches and other parameters such as accessibility. In this sense, Fuengirola has had a beach specially adapted to people with reduced mobility since 2000, which is precisely one of the aspects that the organization has distinguished in this edition. In fact, today, the four sandy areas of the city have a plot completely adapted to this sector of the population, with shaded areas, wooden floors to facilitate movement with wheelchairs or people who have other difficulties, and they also have assistance from rescue personnel. In addition, two seasons ago the City Council incorporated an audio guide system that allows assistance to the bathroom for blind people and bathrooms for people with ostomies.
In terms of security, Fuengirola’s beaches have a large human device made up of lifeguards, municipal security guards and Local Police officers, in addition to the aerial surveillance service with drones along the entire coast.
Services
The Fuengirola coastline extends seven kilometers of completely urban and accessible beaches, divided into four zones. A total of 69 hammock plots are distributed in them; 29 beach bars; 64 pedestrian accesses to the beach, which have showers, footbaths and rest seats; fourteen public toilets. Four hammock plots for people with reduced mobility (each of them has shaded areas and personalized attention from the rescue and lifeguard team). Pleasure boat and water sports areas. There are also three pedal boat areas, two paddle surf areas, as well as an area for moragas on El Castillo beach.
Five modules for the Rescue and First Aid Service are also distributed along its sandy beaches, plus one for police coordination. This task is reinforced with the daily cleaning of all these spaces. To do this, the City Council has three screening machines, a large team of operators, as well as litter bins and ecological islands on the surface for the selective collection of waste on all beaches.
Furthermore, in the lifeguard modules installed in each of the areas, there are ‘sunlights’ that inform bathers of the type of sun protection they should use. The beaches also have a public address system to notify beach users.
