The Fuengirola City Council reinforces the pruning service to act on more than 3,500 palm and orange trees in the city

At the same time, two contracts are being executed to prune some 1,600 palm trees, on the one hand, and 1,900 orange trees, on the other. In addition, the Department of Urban Ecology is carrying out preventive pruning work on large trees such as jacarandas or ficus.

3/10/2026 -Fuengirola City Council has reinforced the pruning service with the aim of acting on more than 3,500 specimens of palm and orange trees, two of the most numerous tree species in the municipality. This was announced this morning by the Councilor for Urban Ecology, José Sánchez, during a visit to the work that is currently being carried out on the Paseo Marítimo de Carvajal.

“We are developing a palm tree pruning service that began to be carried out at the beginning of this month of March and has a deadline until July 12. However, the City Council’s intention is to finish these works much sooner so that, at the beginning of the summer season, all the palm trees in the municipality are in perfect condition,” Sánchez explained.

In this sense, the mayor has indicated that “this contract includes the pruning of approximately 1,600 palm trees. We are currently working on the Paseo Marítimo and later we will act on roads such as Alcalde Clemente Díaz Avenue, Jacinto Benavente or Frascuelo Street, as well as in the Los Núcleos palm grove. Between parks and streets we will reach around 1,600 or 1,700 specimens.”

The municipal official has indicated that this reinforcement of preventive pruning responds, first of all, to safety reasons. “When palm trees go for a long time without pruning, dry leaves can detach and fall, which could cause damage to pedestrians or vehicles. In addition, these actions also respond to criteria of public ornamentation, since palm trees look much better when they are correctly pruned.” In this sense, he added that, along with pruning the leaves, the trunk is also being brushed, which significantly improves its aesthetic appearance.

Sánchez has also warned that, due to these tasks, at specific times traffic cuts could occur, as part of the security measures that must be adopted by the company in charge of the service, specialized in work at height. “For this reason, we want to ask the neighbors for their understanding, since these actions aim to improve and maintain the municipality’s trees in good condition,” he said.

In parallel to this work, the councilor highlighted that a specific contract is also being executed for the pruning of orange trees that will affect around 1,900 specimens. “This contract began at the end of last year and will last approximately until the month of April,” he indicated.

On the other hand, the Urban Ecology Area is carrying out preventive pruning work on large trees with its own resources, especially on species such as jacarandas and ficus, with the aim of reducing the risk of falling branches.

The councilor recalled that the high number of palm and orange trees in the municipality makes it practically impossible to carry out all these works solely with municipal means. For this reason, it is necessary to resort to specialized companies that have the appropriate technical means to carry out these tasks with maximum safety guarantees.
