Fuengirola consolidates its innovative, sustainable and safe city model in 2025
The City Council has made progress in transforming Fuengirola into a more efficient, dynamic city designed for people, using innovation as a tool to make the lives of residents easier. In terms of mobility, road safety has been reinforced with traffic calming measures, such as the creation of elevated pedestrian crossings and the increase in preventive controls.
12/17/2025 – Fuengirola City Council has presented the balance of actions carried out during 2025 by the Departments of Innovation and Mobility, an exercise marked by the determined drive for digital transformation and the improvement of mobility and road safety. This was announced by the councilor responsible for both areas, Isabel González, who explained that the objective was to consolidate an innovative, sustainable and safe city model, capable of optimizing public resources to improve the quality of life of residents and visitors, as well as reinforcing security and promoting sustainability.
“In Fuengirola, sustainable mobility and innovation are already visible realities in the daily lives of our neighbors. 2025 has been a year of events, also of launching strategic projects, but above all we have developed projects aimed at improving and facilitating the daily life of Fuengirola residents,” said González, highlighting that “in the last year we have taken firm steps to transform Fuengirola into a more modern, sustainable, efficient city designed, above all, for people, using innovation as a tool to make the lives of neighbors easier.”
Fuengirola Smart City
Among the main actions, the mayor has highlighted the consolidation of the Fuengirola Smart City Platform, which integrates sensors and devices “that allow us to have the city connected and see in real time what is happening, with the aim of being more efficient to offer a better service to citizens.” Currently, the system allows remote management of luminaires, traffic lights, cameras, noise control and environmental sensors, as well as irrigation sensors.
Mobility, traffic and road safety
In terms of mobility, Isabel González explained that “we have opted for a clearly more sustainable model, developing traffic calming actions with different measures, such as the creation of elevated pedestrian crossings, which allow a reduction in vehicle speed and greater safety for pedestrians.”
Another notable aspect regarding mobility in the annual balance has been the reinforcement of preventive controls “with more than 2,500 speed, alcohol and drug controls and with more than 5,000 actions carried out on signs.” All of these tasks are supported by a continuous surveillance system using almost 200 cameras distributed throughout the municipality.
The commitment to electric cars in the municipal fleet, “acquiring new electric vehicles and installing more charging points” has been another of the highlights in terms of mobility, as has the consolidation of the new public transport model, “increasingly accessible with our Citizen Card, which allows citizens not only to travel for free on the bus, but also to access numerous services, such as signing up for Youth Area activities or reserving paddle tennis courts.”
The Citizen Card, with more than 51,000 active users, continues to expand services, incorporating new functionalities in sports facilities and local commerce.
Cross work
The Department of Innovation works transversally with other municipal departments, such as the Area of Commerce, through the Fuengirola + Commerce project, which has allowed the development of smart signage, digital marketing and commercial revitalization actions, with more than 3,000 participating businesses and 2,000 active users on the ‘Fuengirola más VIVA’ platform.
The Gecor platform has been another of the tools that the mayor of Innovation has highlighted in her annual balance, pointing out that “it is an application that is constantly renewed and updated so that the relationship between the City Council and the neighbors is much more comfortable, facilitating the communication of incidents on public roads and allowing detected problems to be solved quickly and effectively. It is a tool that the mayor opted for many years ago and that we are continually expanding and improving. It is very useful, easy to use and I recommend everyone to use it.”
To conclude, Isabel González has advanced that “from the Department of Innovation we continue working with different areas such as Culture, Tourism, Urban Planning or Social Services in different projects to put Fuengirola at the forefront and so that technology is available to everyone and makes the lives of our neighbors easier.”
