The Fuengirola City Council renews the paper and cardboard mailboxes of fifteen ecological islands with funds from the Provincial Council
They have been replaced by a larger model to facilitate deposits and prevent the access of this waste to the underground containers from clogging.
10/16/2025 – The Fuengirola City Council has renewed the paper and cardboard mailboxes of fifteen ecological islands through a financial contribution provided by the Malaga Provincial Council. This was announced this morning by the Councilor for Cleaning, Carmen Díaz, and the provincial deputy, Francisco José Martín.
“The fifteen paper container openings have already been completed, which is a part of what has been spent with the Provincial Council’s Unconditional Funds for the year 2024, which on this occasion were totally assigned to the Department of Cleaning. In this case we are talking about 67,956 euros, which is the amount, with VAT included, of the 15 paper and cardboard container openings,” explained Carmen Díaz.
The mayor has indicated that it has been decided to change these paper and cardboard mailboxes, “because the ones we had until now were round and the waste access opening was smaller. Therefore, as soon as someone did not fold the cardboard correctly, a jam occurred and no more paper would enter. So, we have identified the points that are most prone to these jams occurring and we have replaced them with another model with a larger opening. wide to avoid this problem.”
Specifically, Díaz has indicated that the locations where the paper and cardboard mailboxes have been replaced are the following: Avenida de Las Salinas (2), Plaza González Anaya (1), Avenida de Los Boliches (3), Calle Málaga (3), Calle Lanzarote (2), Avenida Jesús Cautivo (3) and Calle Navarra (1).
The person in charge of the Department of Cleaning has recalled that “the cardboard must come folded and put inside the mouths of the ecological islands and in the event that it is full, there is normally always an island or container nearby where that cardboard can be deposited. In addition, in the case of businesses that deposit a lot of cardboard, the City Council has a door-to-door service and on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays they approach the business that is attached to that service and collect the cardboard you need.” To join this initiative you just have to send a WhatsApp message to 678430433 indicating the name of the establishment, address and contact person.
For his part, the provincial deputy and councilor of Fuengirola, Francisco José Martín, pointed out that “today we are reviewing the actions that are being carried out in all the neighborhoods of the municipality to change the cardboard collection points, thanks to the subsidy that the Provincial Council carried out through the different Care Plans. In this case it is a subsidy of 350,000 euros for investments in the city and which has been aimed at improving the Cleaning service. Fuengirola”.
In this sense, the councilor recalled that “the new amount corresponding to 2025, of 34 million euros, was recently approved, so that it can be distributed among all the municipalities in the province of Malaga and Fuengirola, on this occasion, will receive one million euros, which we can allocate to carrying out works.”
