6/11/2026 – The Juan Gómez ‘Juanito’ Pavilion in Fuengirola will be the venue on June 21, starting at 11:00 a.m., for the International Competition and Exhibition ‘Sailboats in the World’, an event that will bring together more than 200 participants from different parts of the world and will turn the city into one of the main European references for this emblematic Peruvian dance. This was announced by the Councilor for Foreign Projection of the Fuengirola City Council, Julio Rodríguez, and the European coordinator of ‘Marineras in the World’, Begoña Requejo, who have highlighted the importance of this meeting to continue strengthening the international, diverse and multicultural character of the municipality.
“We are proud that Fuengirola has been chosen to host an event of these characteristics. The marinera is a cultural expression deeply rooted in Peru and increasingly has a greater international projection. That our city shares the spotlight with large European capitals such as Paris or Milan, which have already hosted this event, demonstrates our ability to organize meetings of international relevance and our firm commitment to multiculturalism,” said Rodríguez.
The councilor also recalled the close ties that Fuengirola maintains with the Peruvian community residing in the city and highlighted that “sharing culture, traditions and artistic manifestations is an extraordinary way to strengthen ties between peoples and enrich the social and cultural life of the municipality.”
For her part, Begoña Requejo explained that this will be the first time that the contest is held in Andalusia. “Today the marinera is danced all over the world. There are competitions and exhibitions in the United States, Japan and in numerous European cities, and now we will have the privilege of celebrating this great meeting in Fuengirola. In addition, we will have the participation of 22 world champions, authentic leaders of this discipline and representatives of the highest level of the Peruvian marinera,” he highlighted.
The event will bring together more than 200 national and international dancers from Peru, Chile, Argentina, the United States, Italy, Belgium and other countries, who will offer the public a show of great artistic and technical quality. Attendees will be able to enjoy the elegance, color and expressiveness that characterize this traditional dance, considered one of the main cultural symbols of the Andean country.
The marinera is considered the national dance of Peru and constitutes one of the most emblematic expressions of its cultural identity. Its origin is found in the fusion of different traditions, including Spanish fandango, zamacueca with African roots and various indigenous dances, giving rise to a unique artistic manifestation that has transcended borders.
This dance represents the courtship between a man and a woman through elegant movements, subtle gestures and the use of the scarf as a central element of the choreography. The harmony of the movements, the interpretation and the connection between the dancers turn each performance into an example of art, tradition and feeling.
With the celebration of this event, Fuengirola continues to consolidate its position as a city open to the world, committed to cultural diversity and capable of hosting international meetings that enrich its cultural programming and strengthen its external projection.
